Fellowships: what NIAS offers

Fellowships at NIAS are residential fellowships. The NIAS Fellow will be allotted an office in the main building with a personal computer and internet connection, and be entitled to the use of the library service and a limited amount of support.

Please note: NIAS is expected to move from Wassenaar to Amsterdam in the summer of 2015. NIAS will be situated in the historical centre of Amsterdam.

Accommodation

Currently, free accommodation in a studio apartment on campus in Wassenaar (or equivalent housing) is offered to unaccompanied Fellows from outside the Netherlands. Also in Amsterdam studio apartments near the institute will be available. A possible net contribution to be paid for the (fully furnished) studio apartments will be determined at a later stage.

In Wassenaar, housing at subsidised rate is currently offered to NIAS Fellows from outside the Netherlands who bring their partners or families. Accommodation is offered in apartments and family homes in Wassenaar at a subsidized rate. In Amsterdam apartments for families will be offered in the area of Amstelveen (south of Amsterdam). The net contribution to be paid for the (fully furnished) family apartments in 2015/2016 will be determined at a later stage.

Fellows from the Netherlands living within a range of about 50 kilometers of the Institute are expected to commute daily. Commuting costs are reimbursed on the basis of government regulations. Other Fellows from the Netherlands can apply for free accommodation in a studio apartment on campus. In that case, commuting costs will not be reimbursed.

Stipends and replacement subsidies for regular NIAS Fellows

NIAS may offer a stipend to researchers from abroad in the case of loss of income and may offer a replacement subsidy to Dutch universities to compensate for the loss of teaching hours of the researcher.

The NIAS budget for stipends and replacement subsidies is not large enough to offer each fellow a full stipend or replacement subsidy. All fellows from abroad are therefore asked to persuade their home institutions or another institution or foundation to cover their salary entirely or in part. In the case of a home institution that cannot cover the salary of the fellow for the duration of his/her stay at NIAS, NIAS may offer a stipend up to € 3,800.- for senior fellows (plus ten years after obtaining Ph.D.) and up to € 2,600.- for junior fellows (less then 10 years after obtaining Ph.D.).

The replacement subsidy for fellows that hold a position at a university in the Netherlands is calculated on the basis of the costs for replacing the teaching duties of the fellow during his/her stay at NIAS. This means that only for the teaching part of the appointment of the fellow, a replacement subsidy can be obtained.
The maximum replacement subsidy is up to € 3,800.- for senior fellows and up to € 2,600.- for junior fellows (the stated amounts are based on full time equivalent replacement). This replacement subsidy is to be regarded as an opportunity to provide a younger scholar or scientist with teaching experience. In some cases, also for fellows from abroad, an agreement can be made with the university at which the fellow is working to provide the university with a replacement grant instead of a stipend, for the teaching obligations of the fellow.

The Fellowship from NIAS does not constitute an employment relationship. For this reason, NIAS is not obligated to make social insurance contributions; accordingly, NIAS makes no contributions to pension or unemployment insurance.

Lunches, coffee/tea, academic and social activities

Lunches on weekdays, coffee and tea in the main building, as well as the monthly contribution to academic and social activities are included in the fellowship.

Travel costs

The Institute will reimburse non-Dutch Fellows’ travel costs to and from NIAS (not family) once.
