New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships

Applications are now open for the 2014 round of the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS)

About NZIDRS

The NZIDRS provides full tuition fees plus a living stipend for up to 36 months for international students to undertake PhD study at a New Zealand university. The NZIDRS are funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand.

The NZIDRS cover:

  • University tuition fees and associated student levies for 3 years
  • An annual living stipend of NZ$25,000 or NZ$2083.33 per month for 36 months
  • Medical insurance coverage up to NZ$600 annually for 3 years

Recipients can undertake PhD study in any discipline at any of New Zealand eight Universities:
AUT University, Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington.

Eligibility criteria

In order to receive the scholarship, you must meet ALL five of the following eligibility criterion.

1.     be a citizen of any country except New Zealand, Australia and Fiji

2.     hold a minimum equivalent 3.6/4.0 GPA OR A / A+ average in your most recent or highest post graduate tertiary qualification

3.     conduct your PhD study in New Zealand (not from a distance)

4.     meet the requirements for direct entry into a PhD programme at a New Zealand University. This includes; having completed the required academic qualifications for direct entry and meeting the requirements for English language proficiency

5.     If you have commenced your PhD studies in New Zealand, your start date must be after 15 January 2014

Selection criteria

The scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and the impact of the proposed research for New Zealand.  Research projects should have a tangible, positive effect on:

  • New Zealand’s economy, in terms of international trade and business development in key sectors
  • Or, New Zealand’s population in terms of health and safety
  • Or, Research and scholarship in the above two areas

2. Submit your form and required documents to Education New Zealand before 15 July 2014. The Application form contains detailed instructions as to how to submit your application and documents.

HEC Split Phd and Post Doctoral Fellowship Programme in France

INTRODUCTION

The Higher Education Commission and the French Embassy in Pakistan aim to help the development of cooperation between French and Pakistani scientific organisations, engaged in R&D programs of all the scientific and technology fields. In this framework, the Higher Education Commission and the French Embassy in Pakistan launch a joint program for research mobility. This fellowship program is intended for highly qualified Pakistani doctoral and postdoctoral scientists and offers them an excellent opportunity to do research in France for 6 to 9 months. Knowledge of French language is not necessary.However, preference will be given to research areas of Energy, Renewable Energy, Water Resources, Climate Changes, Environment and Social Sciences.

OBJECTIVES

Universities in Pakistan in recent years have embarked on imparting education in critical areas to cope with the advanced technical manpower needs of the country in the 21st century. To achieve this objective, it is essential that the universities and other institutions of higher learning should not only be well equipped but staffed with highly qualified and experienced teachers. With these qualities they would be able to train more Ph.D.s with in the country. In view of this, it is essential to send our university teachers for post-doctoral research abroad to enable them to up-date their knowledge and skills in selective fields and specialization and new research projects

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

 

1.    For Split PhD fellowship (6 months in France):

  •  Any Pakistani /AJK National PhD student:

a.    Complied with the following HEC quality criteria for PhD degree:

i.  Completed coursework of 18 credit hours, (students enrolled in PhD before May 2005  are                                         exempted from this condition),

ii.  Passed the international GRE subject test/NTS GAT subject test or university subject                                                 examination is required to be passed.

b.    Has an approved PhD research topic and synopsis by the Board of Advanced Studies and                                         Research (BASR) or Directorate of Advanced Studies and Research (DASR) or equivalent body

of the university.

c.    Has an official acceptance/invitation letter for research from a French university/ institute/laboratory.

 

2.    For Post-Doctoral Fellowship (09 months in France):

Any Pakistani /AJK National:

a.      Holding a PhD degree from HEC recognized university.

b.      Maximum 50 years of age on closing date

c.       Be a regular employee of:

i.  HEC recognized Public/ Private Sector University or Degree Awarding Institute.

ii. Public sector R&D organization.

d.      Has a clearly written research proposal, relevant to his current job/institution recommended/ endorsed

by  the employer.

e.      Has an official acceptance/invitation letter for research from a French university/institute/laboratory.

f.       Must not have availed Post Doctoral Fellowship in the last five (5) years.

 

If PhD from any of HEC funded scholarship program:

 

a.      Category I : Scholars who have completed their PhD in Pakistan through indigenous scholarship offered by HEC / Government of Pakistan and are willing to apply or selected for Post Doctorate Fellowship Program are required to submit the following documents / deed of agreement:

Experience. At least two years full time relevant experience (including pre/post PhD) as a regular faculty member in a Public / Private Sector University / DAI or a regular employee of R&D organization.
NOC. NOC from the parent department / university by the authorized officer, to the effect that applicant if successful will be given one year leave.

 

b.    Category II: Scholars who have completed their PhD from abroad through scholarship offered by HEC / Government of Pakistan and are willing to apply or selected for Post Doctorate Fellowship Program are required to submit the following documents / deed of agreement:

Experience. At least three years full time Post PhD relevant experience at an appropriate rank as a regular faculty member in a Public / Private Sector University / DAI or a regular employee of R&D organization.
NOC. NOC from the parent department / university by the authorized officer, to the effect that applicant if successful will be given one year leave.

Deed of Agreement. Scholar would be required to complete the remaining duration of initial bond of overseas scholarship after returning from Post Doctorate Fellowship. This duration would be determined form the date of joining the parent department. In addition, he would also be required to serve for another two years in its parent department after completion of Post Doctorate Fellowship. The total period of bond to serve in Pakistan will not exceed six to seven years. (2 years for Post Doc and 5 years for PhD).

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

The applications of all those applicants, who fulfil the basic eligibility criteria, would be sent by French Embassy in Pakistan to Scientific Commission in Paris for further evaluation based on following parameters:

 

a.    Scientific Level of the applicants: excellent study and research achievements.

b.    Scientific Level of the French host laboratory: recognized public or private research organization situated in France.

c.    Scientific quality of the research proposal: innovative approach and originality of the project, feasibility

(access to resources etc.) of the project and the impact of its potential results.

History or background of award
To encourage postgraduate research Victoria offers scholarships to those about to begin their doctoral studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline.

Purpose of award
These Scholarships are intended to encourage and support doctoral study (PhD) at Victoria University of Wellington. As part of the requirements of this Scholarship, the recipient is expected to contribute 150 hours per annum to the academic life of the School in which they undertake study. The purpose of this contribution is to provide them with an insight into the work undertaken by, and the expectations placed on, the academic community in the University. It also provides an opportunity to develop enduring relationships with the School. This contribution may be as a tutor, research assistant, laboratory demonstrator or supervisor, or teaching assistant.

Selection criteria
The Scholarships are open to graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol full time for a Doctorate (PhD) at Victoria University or who have commenced their doctoral study at Victoria University. It is important to read the scholarship regulations available from the link above before application.

Applicants with Victoria University ‘offers of study’ of who are current Victoria University doctoral students must apply on the application form available from the link at the top of this webpage.

Please note: In most cases the process for applying for doctoral (PhD) study at Victoria and applying for a Victoria Doctoral Scholarship is one process. From 1 January 2010, for new doctoral (PhD) applicants there will be one application process for admission to the doctoral programme and University and for doctoral scholarships. Please note: Although funding applications will be considered from full time students seeking scholarship support for a doctoral degree for which they are already enrolled at Victoria, if you have applied for a Victoria PhD scholarship in the past, you must provide updated or additional information to apply for a second round. Such applications must be accompanied by clear strong support from supervisors.

Tenure of award
Scholarships will normally be tenable for three years. For a student who has already been enrolled for a Doctorate at Victoria for more than three months at the time when the offer of a Scholarship is made, the maximum length of tenure of the Scholarship will be reduced at the discretion of the Research Scholarships Committee.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Offers of Victoria PhD Scholarships will be made approximately six weeks after each closing date in March, July and November of the year of application. Because some applicants may in the event decline the offer of a Scholarship with the result that further offers have to be made, it is possible that some applicants will not be finally notified of the success or otherwise of their applications three months after application. Please provide a clear and correct email address.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Scholarship recipients must sign a Postgraduate Scholarships Contract agreeing to abide by the attached regulations. Recipients shall be required to devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument without the approval of the University Scholarships Committee. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment (usually tutoring) for up to a further 400 hours in addition to their contribution in any one calendar year. All requests to undertake part-time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor.
Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the University Scholarships Committee may, at its sole discretion, grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of their scholarship for a period not exceeding one year. In most cases such a deferment will coincide with a formal suspension from their doctoral enrolment.
A scholarship shall be terminated if a scholarship recipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of research within one month of the last day of the period of the deferment.

Additional information
Applicants, other than those who have completed all of their study at Victoria, must include a certified copy of their academic record from other institutions with this application. Applicants whose degree has been conferred at any university other than a New Zealand University will be considered in two categories:
Category 1 – applicants from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Germany or Australia must supply an original or certified copy of their university transcript.
Category 2 – applicants from any other country must have their transcript verified and assessed with a course by course evaluation by the educational evaluators: Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
